Preston council sells historic number plate

December 11th, 2013 By Blog Editor
week49-post1 Since the 1930s the city of Preston has owned the number plate CCK1; the plate has been displayed on the mayoral car since this date but they have decided that tradition and history aren't as important as replenishing the council coffers which have recently taken a hit due to government cutbacks. The CCK1 plate will be auctioned on eBay and a reserve of £22,000 will be put on it. This first edition license plate, with the historical connection to the city of Preston, should hopefully exceed the reserve and bring in some much needed cash for Preston city council. Cabinet member for resources, Martyn Rawlinson made a good point when he stated that it really wasn't right to cut services, yet keep this expensive license plate on the mayor's car. It may be old, it may be part of the city's history, but it doesn't do any good. It's a small price to pay to bring that extra cash to the city. This may set an example for other councils to create extra revenue in more unusual and creative ways, and it's also a great opportunity for someone to buy a very rare plate.
